What Conditions Can an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Treat?

Posted on 1/20/2016 by Dr. Michael Allard
A woman suffering from TMJ jaw pain. Many people associate an oral surgeon with wisdom teeth removal, and while this is certainly one of the procedures that an oral and maxillofacial surgeon can complete, these dental and medical professionals can perform a variety of other services. Oral surgeons repair deformities and deficiencies in a variety of facial structures, allowing your face to appear and function like normal.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Education

An oral surgeon will complete four years of undergraduate education before going on to dental school. After graduating from dental school, they will dedicate several more years to their education by completing an oral surgery residency. The extensive specialized education that they obtain in this residency program will give them the knowledge of facial structures and how they work to support proper jaw movement.

Procedures Provided by Oral Surgeons

Oral surgeons correct a variety of issues, and if you are in need of any of the following services, your dentist will likely refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon:

•  Cleft palate and lip repair. A cleft palate or lip is a major deformity that can have long-lasting impacts on health and appearance. A series of surgeries to correct these issues will likely begin during your child's first year of life.
•  TMJ disorder. An oral surgeon can provide surgical treatment options to ease the symptoms of a patient's TMJ disorder.
•  Craniofacial surgery. Usually involving multiple procedures, this surgery targets deformities of the face, including cheeks, the forehead, jaw, and nasal structures.
•  Orthognathic surgery. Corrective jaw surgery will improve on the patient's appearance while correcting bite problems that may be preventing him from chewing properly.

If you are in need of a surgical procedure or have more questions about how an oral and maxillofacial surgeon might be able to help you, contact our office for more information.
