Corrective Jaw Surgery, also known as Orthognathic Surgery, is performed by an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon to correct misaligned bites. This process is done when orthodontics, such as braces, is not enough to correct a misaligned bite.
For some patients, corrective jaw surgery is needed to repair problems that occurred in fetal development, known as congenital abnormalities, or to treat severe orthodontic conditions, problems that occurred due to a severe impact injury, problems in a patient's skeletal frame, or other disorders.
Corrective Jaw Surgery, most often performed under general anesthesia, the dentist will reshape or reposition the bones of the face and jaw in order to force the jaws and teeth into alignment.
Part of the process in this procedure is working closely with an orthodontist to structure a plan for corrective work following surgery. Your orthodontist will make further recommendations as needed. Oral surgeons perform the work needed when orthodontics alone is unable to correct the problem.
Patients who seek corrective jaw surgery include those who:
Have difficulty with chewing food.
Suffer from chronic TMJ pain, jaw pain, or joint pain.
Have excessive wear to their teeth.
Were born with facial defects that affect their bite or aesthetics.
Have a protruding jaw.
Experience difficulty in swallowing or choke easily.
Are unable to make their lips meet easily or without strain.
Have an open bite, meaning their lower jaw and upper jaw are unable to close together.
Have experienced a severe facial injury.
Have continual problems with snoring or sleep apnea.
Suffer from continuous mouth breathing.
We can correct these issues and help place you on the path to then be turned over to your orthodontist to give you the teeth that can make you want to smile.
