Do You Have a Fractured Tooth?

A woman suffering from a tooth fracture.
Having a fractured tooth can be an incredibly painful experience. However, it isn't always easy to tell that your tooth is fractured. It can happen without any pain at the moment of the fracture, so it is hard to detect.

The tooth can become painful down the line, leaving you wondering what happened to your tooth. It is important that if you suspect a fractured tooth, you get it checked out quickly. That way, you stand the best chances of being able to salvage the tooth.

Pay Attention to These Signs If You Think You Fractured Your Tooth

If you bite down and suddenly your tooth begins to hurt, you may have a fractured tooth.

The pressure of biting down on a fractured tooth can cause the parts of the fractured tooth to pry apart. This can expose the root of the tooth, and sometimes even pinch it between the two parts of the tooth. If you notice this happening, call your dentist.

Times where you drink something either very cold or very warm, you may also notice pain that comes on out of nowhere. Exposure to extreme temperatures can bring about pain from a fractured tooth because the fracture itself is just a slight opening, but liquids can get into that opening. It doesn't take much for the exposure to spark intense pain.

Fractured teeth can go undetected for a while, especially if the pain is intermittent. It may seem like you just bit wrong, since the pain may quickly dissipate.

However, if you notice that your pain comes on like that more than once, you should contact our office. The sooner a fractured tooth gets confirmed, the less likely you are to face an extraction of that tooth.
