The pain that is suffered from TMD can be intense at times, and often the pain is not controllable outside of the use of medications or treatment. However, there is something you can do to prevent some of that pain.
Certain foods and drinks can aggravate your TMD symptoms and should therefore be avoided when possible. By choosing your foods wisely, you can help control some of your TMD symptoms and help ease some of your pain.
Foods to Avoid Avoiding foods that are difficult to chew can help prevent further pain from TMD. Chewing foods that are sticky, hard, or chewy can aggravate your jaws as it takes more movement from your jaw to eat these types of foods.
Some examples of foods that could be difficult to chew could include chewing gum, caramel or other gummy candy, hard bread, hard candy or thick sandwiches. Cold or frozen foods such as ice cream or popsicles should also be avoided as TMD symptoms are triggered by cold foods.
Drinks Can Aggravate TMD as Well
Caffeine is a part of everyone's day, but it can also aggravate your TMD. Caffeine can cause more TMD symptoms due to its ability to increase tension in the body, which can result in the tensing of your jaws.
Increased tension can lead to grinding as well, and grinding is known to lead to increased difficulty from TMD. Drinking cold drinks can also increase your pain from TMD, as the coldness can cause the muscles to become tense as well.
Even though it is not as enjoyable to have a lukewarm drink, the consequences of drinking a cold drink with TMD are not worth it. Find out more from us about other steps you can take to decrease your TMD symptoms.
