We Can Help with Ringing in Your Ears If You Tell Us Soon Enough

We Can Help with Ringing in Your Ears If You Tell Us Soon EnoughRinging in the ears is also known as tinnitus can be caused by many reasons. One of the most common is listening to loud music for an extended period. However, when you have constant tinnitus, there could be another explanation that has to do with your oral health.

If you recently had a dental procedure that required drilling, you will probably experience some ringing in the ears for a short period. It will subside after a couple of hours. When tinnitus doesn't go away and keeps surfacing for seemingly unknown reasons, it could be related to other conditions such as temporomandibular joint disorders or TMD.

What Causes Ringing in the Ears

If you have more permanent ringing in the ears or tinnitus, it could be due to other reasons such as:

•  An abscessed or impacted tooth
•  Bruxism - the grinding or clenching of the teeth at night
•  Jaw misalignment
•  Overbite or underbite
•  Metal fillings that contain mercury
•  Certain medications

Treatment for Tinnitus

The only way of knowing if you have ringing in the ears is if you tell us. There are some signs that we can see during an examination that indicate if you suffer from a temporomandibular joint disorder, but if you let us know, we can help you as soon as possible. While in some cases ringing in the ears cannot be cured, we will try all possible options.

It is essential to determine the precise reason for the ringing in your ears. To do this, our doctors will examine you and test your jaw by placing their fingers on either side of your face, by the ears. They will ask you to open and close your mouth to determine if the movement is as it should be.

We will also order a set of X-rays to see what is going on with your jaw. In many cases, the ringing in the ears can be explained by another condition and treated with something as simple as a mouthguard. Please don't hesitate to call us if the ringing in your ears doesn't go away.
