How Oral Surgeons Can Also Help Place Hearing Aids
Posted on 4/10/2018 by Dr. Michael Allard
Oral surgeons assist in placing hearing aids for patients who require what is called Bone Anchored Hearing Aid or BAHA. These devices require the help of oral surgeons because they need to be implanted as oppose to traditional hearing aids. Bone anchored hearing devices are able to remedy hearing loss by means of bone conduction of sound vibrations. Conventional hearing aids on the other hand, work by amplifying auditory sounds that go into the ear canal. Why Bone-Anchored Hearing Devices Are Better ChoicesThere are certain hearing problems that cannot be helped by traditional hearing aids and only bone anchored hearing devices can. BAHA bypasses these conventional tools through the conveyance of sound vibration to the inner ear using the skull bone. This is applicable for those suffering from problems relating to the ear canal and middle ear. Some of the conditions that can benefit from the use of bone anchored hearing devices are single sided deafness, chronic ear infections, malformations of the outer or middle ear, acoustic neuroma, Meniere's disease, middle ear disease or dysfunction, and sudden hearing loss. How Do Oral Surgeons Perform the Surgery? The procedure is not complicated and does not require for the patient to be admitted to a hospital. It lasts for about an hour and once done, the patient can go home. The procedure includes the placement of a small titanium implant that is usually four millimeters longs to the bone at the back of the ear. As time passes by after the procedure, the titanium implants eventually assimilate with the bone naturally. There is also a small support that is placed which protrudes through the skin. This abutment is where the sound processor and removable microphone will be attached to. We can provide more information about bone-anchored hearing devices and how placing one to you can help you with your hearing problems.... Read more...
