What to Expect After a Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Posted on 11/15/2025 by Dr. Michael Allard
Getting your wisdom teeth removed is a common procedure that most people experience at some point in their lives. While the thought of oral surgery might seem daunting, knowing what to expect afterwards can help you feel more prepared and confident.
The First Few Days
After your wisdom tooth extraction, you can expect some swelling and discomfort. This is normal and should gradually subside over the next few days. Your dentist will likely prescribe pain medication to help manage the discomfort.
It's important to follow your dentist's instructions for post-operative care, which may include:
•
Resting: Take it easy for the first 24-48 hours after surgery. Avoid strenuous activity and get plenty of rest.
•
Ice packs: Apply ice packs to your face to reduce swelling.
•
Diet: Stick to soft foods for the first few days. As you heal, you can gradually introduce more solid foods.
•
Oral hygiene: Gently rinse your mouth with salt water several times a day to keep the extraction site clean. Avoid brushing directly on the extraction site for the first few days.
•
Medications: Take your pain medication as prescribed by your dentist.
Healing and Recovery
Most people recover from wisdom tooth extraction within a week or two. However, it's important to be patient and listen to your body. If you experience any excessive bleeding, swelling, or pain, contact your dentist immediately.
During the healing process, you may notice some changes in your mouth, such as:
•
Gaps where your wisdom teeth were: These gaps will eventually close on their own, or your dentist may recommend restoration dentistry to fill the space.
•
Numbness: You may experience numbness in your tongue, lips, or chin. This is usually temporary and should gradually improve over time.
•
Dry socket: This is a rare complication that can occur when the blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged. Dry socket can be painful and requires treatment by your dentist.
Follow-Up Care
Your dentist will schedule a follow-up appointment to check on your healing and remove any stitches. They may also recommend additional X-rays to ensure proper healing.
Following your dentist's instructions and taking good care of your oral health are essential for a smooth recovery after wisdom tooth extraction. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact your dentist. They are there to help you through every step of the process.
