5 things you might not know about oral cancer

Wooden mannequin pushing a large boulder labeled 'Oral Cancer,' symbolizing the challenges of oral cancer awareness and prevention.Oral cancer, affecting the mouth, lips, tongue, and throat, is a serious health concern. Many people aren't aware of the nuances of this disease, which can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. This discussion aims to shed light on some important, but often overlooked, aspects of oral cancer to empower you with knowledge.

Early Detection Can Be Life-Saving

Finding oral cancer early makes a HUGE difference in successful treatment. When caught in its initial stages, the survival rate is significantly higher. Regular dental check-ups are essential because dentists and hygienists are trained to spot suspicious lesions or changes in your mouth. They can perform an oral cancer screening during your routine visit. Don't wait for symptoms to appear – proactive screening is key.

It's Not Just a Smoker's Disease

While tobacco use (smoking and smokeless) is a major risk factor for oral cancer, it’s crucial to understand that it's not the only cause. A growing number of oral cancer cases are linked to the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), particularly HPV-16. This virus is also associated with cervical cancer. Practicing safe sex and discussing HPV vaccination with your doctor can help reduce your risk.

Symptoms Can Be Subtle

Oral cancer doesn't always present with obvious, painful symptoms. Sometimes, the signs are subtle and easily dismissed. These can include a persistent sore in your mouth that doesn't heal, a white or red patch on the gums, tongue, or lining of the mouth, difficulty swallowing or chewing, a lump or thickening in the cheek, or numbness in the mouth or tongue. If you notice any of these changes that last for more than two weeks, it's important to seek professional evaluation.

Self-Exams Can Be Helpful

In addition to regular dental visits, performing self-exams of your mouth can help you become familiar with the normal appearance of your oral tissues. Use a mirror and a bright light to examine your lips, gums, tongue (top, bottom, and sides), cheeks, and the roof and floor of your mouth. Feel for any unusual lumps, bumps, or changes in texture. While self-exams are not a substitute for professional screenings, they can help you identify potential problems early.

Diet Plays a Role

Your diet can also influence your risk of developing oral cancer. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides essential vitamins and antioxidants that can protect against cell damage. Conversely, a diet high in processed foods, red meat, and alcohol can increase your risk. Making healthy dietary choices is an important part of overall cancer prevention.
