Tooth Extraction - Is a dental implant in my future?

Posted on 5/15/2026 by Dr. Michael Allard

Maybe it's due to decay, gum disease, or an accident. Whatever the reason, once a tooth is gone, you might start wondering about what happens next. A common question I hear is: "Will I need a dental implant?" Let's explore what goes into that decision.

The Gap After Extraction: What Happens?

When a tooth is removed, it leaves a space. It's not just about the missing tooth itself. The surrounding teeth can start to shift into that space. This shifting can cause problems with your bite, make it harder to clean your teeth properly (increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease), and even affect your jaw joint. Furthermore, the bone that used to support the tooth starts to shrink over time. This bone loss can affect the appearance of your jawline and make future dental procedures more complex.

Understanding Dental Implants

A dental implant is essentially an artificial tooth root. It's typically made of titanium, a material that's very compatible with the human body. The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone. Over time, the bone grows around the implant, a process called osseointegration, making it a solid and permanent part of your mouth. Once the implant is secure, a replacement tooth (a crown) is attached to it. Implants look and function very much like natural teeth.

When is an Implant Recommended?

Whether or not an implant is the best option depends on a few key factors.

•  Location of the Missing Tooth: The location of the missing tooth is a big factor. Missing teeth in the front of your mouth are more noticeable and affect your smile more directly, so an implant may be recommended to restore aesthetics. The back teeth handle a lot of chewing force, so replacing them is important for maintaining proper function.
•  Overall Oral Health: Your overall oral health is crucial. Healthy gums and sufficient bone density are essential for a successful implant. If you have untreated gum disease or significant bone loss, these issues will need to be addressed before an implant can be considered.
•  Patient Preferences and Lifestyle: Some patients prefer implants because they are a long-term solution that doesn't affect adjacent teeth. Other options, like bridges or removable dentures, may be more suitable depending on your individual needs and preferences. Your lifestyle and ability to maintain good oral hygiene also play a role.

Alternatives to Implants

Implants are not the only solution for replacing missing teeth. Other options include:

•  Bridges: A bridge fills the gap with a false tooth that is anchored to the adjacent teeth.
•  Removable Partial Dentures: A removable partial denture is a plate with one or more artificial teeth that can be taken in and out.
•  No Replacement: In some cases, if the missing tooth is in a location that doesn't significantly affect function or appearance, you and your dentist may decide that no replacement is necessary.

Making the Decision

The decision to get a dental implant after a tooth extraction is a personal one. It's important to discuss your options with your dentist or oral surgeon to determine the best course of action for your specific situation. They can assess your oral health, discuss the pros and cons of each option, and help you make an informed decision that will restore your smile and maintain your oral health for years to come.
