The Denture Era - Is it Coming to an End?

Posted on 12/17/2015 by Dr. Michael Allard
A glass jar with a set of dentures inside of it.A whopping 35 million Americans as of today are without teeth and despite the many advances in dentistry this number is expected to continue to rise with the increasing number of baby boomers entering their senior years. The term "edentulous" refers to an individual that is without teeth.

Up until recently, the only option for this large number of edentulous patients was to wear dentures to regain the "function" and appearance that come along with a full set of teeth. I say "function" because biting, chewing and speaking with dentures are all difficult task nowhere near as functional as natural teeth.

Luckily, dental advancements have led to a much more effective and aesthetically pleasing solution. Baby boomers entering their golden years, rejoice! As you could soon begin experiencing issues with tooth decay and/or gum disease, you now have a functional tooth replacement solution - dental implants.

Will Dentures Become Obsolete?

It is difficult to say whether or not dentures will eventually become an obsolete tooth replacement practice. They do offer a more affordable solution to the problem so it is very possible that they are not going anywhere.

Dental implants have, however, become the common standard of care for edentulous patients as they offer a more permanent solution to a now temporary problem.

Dental implants mimic the function of natural teeth and for this reason, they are effective in maintaining natural function as well as jawbone structure. They look just like natural teeth and they feel just like natural teeth.

In fact, most patients claim that they can hardly even feel the difference between their dental implants and their once natural teeth. The complete opposite of what those who wear dentures report: difficulty chewing and speaking as well as frequent slips of the denture itself, and even not being able to eat certain foods because of their dentures.

Regardless of whether or not the denture era is over, one thing is for sure and that is that the benefits of dental implants far outweigh those of dentures.
