How to Care for Your Child after His Oral Surgery with IV Sedation

Posted on 4/17/2016 by Dr. Michael Allard
A young boy suffering from jaw pain after his oral surgery.Sedation dentistry is extremely safe and is one of the best ways to help your child through oral surgery. However, you'll want to know what to expect after the procedure so that you can best care for him.

His oral surgeon will give you instructions on how to care for his mouth and signs to look for, but these are a few guidelines you'll want to keep in mind.

Sleeping after Sedation

There are very specific guidelines when it comes to letting your child sleep after IV sedation. He will need to remain under your supervision, and you will want to position him on his side with his chin up and head supported. If he snores, change his head position until the snoring disappears. If his breathing becomes abnormal, wake him up.

Pain after Oral Surgery

Your child might experience some pain and discomfort after his procedure, and over the counter pain medications should be able to address the problem. If they don't seem to be working and your child still complains of pain, contact his oral surgeon for guidance.

Staying Hydrated
The day after your child's oral surgery, it is important for him to stay hydrated. Ensure he is drinking plenty of fluids, and if he is hungry, only feed him soft and highly nutritious foods. Normal eating habits can resume the following day or later if he doesn't feel quite comfortable going back to hard foods yet.

Nausea
Some children experience nausea after IV sedation, and if it is short-lived, it shouldn't be a problem. If your child vomits for more than 20-40 minutes after IV sedation, be sure to contact your oral surgeon for additional instructions.

If you notice any concerning symptoms following your child's procedure, be sure to contact our office right away for advice.
