Getting Dental Implants, Consider Some Diet Restrictions

Posted on 8/25/2016 by Dr. Michael Allard
A diagram of how a dental implant works. When you start seriously considering dental implants and taking steps to get them, you will eventually get the "soft foods diet" talk. But why? Why do you have to eat soft foods after getting an implant? What exactly is the soft foods diet?

Soft Foods

It's not rocket science, soft foods is just what it sounds like. If you have to chew something with vigor, it probably isn't part of the soft foods diet. By sticking to foods that are soft you allow the dental implants to heal properly and integrate into your jawbone.

Osseointegration Takes Time

One of the interesting parts about dental implants is their incredible ability to fuse with the bone in your jaw. This is referred to as osseointegration. Because implants are made out of titanium and titanium is biocompatible, your body recognizes them and accepts them into the skeletal structure - at least, that is the goal.

When we place the implant in your mouth we are counting on your jaw bone growing into and around the post. One of the best ways to ensure that this process goes down without a hitch is to eat soft foods and avoid chewy and tough foods.

When you chew on tough food, there is a tendency for the implant to rock back and forth in its socket, this can break up the bone structures that are trying to integrate with the implant.

It's Only Temporary!

Don't worry, after the healing process is complete and you get the go ahead for your doctor you can go back to eating pretty much anything you want. That's part of the beauty of dental implants, when they are fully healed, they act just like a real tooth!
