If you have suffered tooth loss, your dentist may have suggested dental implants. If you aren't familiar with implants, you may have some questions. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about dental implants and the answers you need.

What are Dental Implants?

Implants are small titanium rods that are surgically placed into your jaw. The rods imitate the roots of your teeth, and support your false teeth, unlike dentures, which are supported directly on the gums.

Are Implants Better Than Dentures?

Implants offer numerous benefits over dentures.

These benefits include:

•  Natural appearance.
•  No worry about slipping or falling out.
•  Less maintenance.
•  More comfortable.
•  Your surrounding natural teeth are untouched.
•  Last a long time. They can even last your entire life.

Are Implants Expensive?

Implants do cost more than dentures. It can cost a few thousand dollars for just a single tooth. While this may seem like a lot, you may wind up spending much more over time if you ignore missing teeth.

How is the Surgery Performed?
On the day of your surgery, you will receive an anesthetic. Any teeth that need to be removed will be extracted. Then, holes are drilled into your jaw (the locations are determined during your consultation) and the implants placed. You will be given temporary teeth to use while you heal.

How Long Do Dental Implants Take to Heal?

There is a lengthy recovery process. After three to four months, you will go back to your dentist's office and abutments will be placed on the rods and impressions taken of your mouth. These impressions are used to create permanent teeth. This process can take a couple more weeks. When the final prosthesis is ready, it will be screwed in place.

Are Dental Implants Safe?

Implants are perfectly safe for anyone who has been deemed healthy enough for the procedure. If you are a smoker, or have suffered significant bone loss, you may not be a candidate. Quitting smoking, or having a bone graft can help to increase your candidacy.

Dental implants are a great option for replacing missing teeth. Please contact us if you have any questions; he will be more than happy to answer them for you.
