How Does an Oral Surgeon Remove an Impacted Tooth?

Posted on 5/10/2018 by Dr. Michael Allard
Impacted Tooth Arrowhead Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery AZ 85308-8370An oral surgeon is skilled in repairing many areas of the mouth. Removing an impacted tooth is something that they specialize in.

Providing compassionate care, they ensure that the patient is comfortable throughout the entire procedure and that the entire tooth is removed. If the tooth is impacted, an incision may need to be made to remove the tooth easily.

What to Expect When Removing an Impacted Tooth

When removing the impacted tooth, the oral surgeon is going to make you feel comfortable. They will numb the area completely and talk you through the process. They will then cut around the tooth, making small cuts where necessary.

Once this is done, they use a tool to grab the tooth that needs to be removed and pull it out completely. You should only feel pressure, never pain, through the process. If you do feel pain, let the surgeon know and they will provide more numbing medication.

If the tooth needs to be broken up, they will do this and then make sure that all of the pieces of tooth are accounted for when removing them. Leaving a piece of the tooth in the mouth can cause an infection to start. With some extractions, an antibiotic will be given to clear the area up and fight off any infections that might start because of the extraction.

It is important that you work with the right oral surgeon for the situation. Speak with our experienced oral surgeons to find out what we are able to do for you.

Make an appointment to have the extraction site assessed and then get the procedure performed. Our oral surgeons are knowledgeable and friendly, and totally understand the ins and outs that come from the more difficult procedure of an impacted extraction.
