Why Do Your Jaw Muscles Hurt After an Auto Accident?

Posted on 6/20/2018 by Dr. Michael Allard
Jaw Pain Arrowhead Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery AZ 85308-8370Have you ever been in an auto accident? If so, then you probably remember the soreness that comes in the days after the accident. You hurt in places you didn't even think about, and find that muscles are sore that you didn't even realize you had.

One of the most common places to be sore is in your jaw. Most people find this odd because they didn't hit anything with their head if the accident was minor. It wasn't the bumping into something that hurt. What hurt was your reaction to the accident.

What Makes the Jaw Get Sore?

When you get into an auto accident, your body clenches up. This includes the jaw. You may not even realize you did it at the time, but it is how your body naturally reacts in that type of situation. If you saw the accident coming, but couldn't get out of the way, that is even more likely to have happened.

Clenching your jaw is simply your way of bracing for the impact. When you see something bad coming, but you are unable to avoid it, your body tenses up all over, including the clenching of your jaw. That is part of why your muscles hurt even when you didn't use them.

Following an auto accident, you should come in and see us. Let us take a good look around your mouth to make sure you didn't cause any cracks or breaks in your teeth when you clenched them together.

Hopefully you were fine following the accident and can have the same said for your mouth. However, if not, we can help you get to where whatever happened to your mouth gets healed up, and you can get back to living life like you want.
