What to Do with Uneven Jaw Growth?
Glendale, AZ

Posted on 1/10/2019 by Dr. Michael Allard
What to Do with Uneven Jaw Growth?Your jaw and your teeth are supposed to be symmetrical. They should look even on both sides of your mouth. While this is what people want, it is not always what happens. Some people end up with uneven jaw growth as part of who they are and other have it happen as the result of trauma or some other problem. When faced with this issue, it is a good idea to know what to do about it.

Causes of Uneven Jaw

One of the most common causes of an uneven jaw is a TMJ disorder. TMJ is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. When it is weakened or is not working properly, it can cause an uneven jaw. The opposite is also true. People that already have an uneven jaw are prone to struggle with a TMJ disorder.

Some of the other reasons for an uneven jaw include poor sleeping position, spinal imbalance and getting older. Some people develop an uneven jaw because they chew their food on only one side of their mouth or they bite their fingernails in an irregular pattern. Many of these things are preventable by making simple changes.

Treating an Uneven Jaw

If the uneven jaw is the result of some habit such as chewing on one side of the mouth, it is possible to correct the problem by overcoming the habit. As long as it is caught early enough, it can correct itself. It is also possible that some type of device can help with an uneven jaw. The last option is for jaw surgery that can break the jaw and reshape it.

No one wants to go through surgery for an uneven jaw, but they also don't want to deal with the problems that it can cause. They don't want to deal with chronic pain and they don't want to damage their teeth and gums. That is why it is important to treat an uneven jaw as soon as possible.
