Benefits of a Tuberosity Reduction

Posted on 7/23/2020 by Dr. Michael Allard
Benefits of a Tuberosity ReductionMost folks would be hard pressed to give an answer if they were asked about what a tuberosity reduction is, what it entails, as well as what it is generally performed for. So with that in mind, we thought we would devote a little time today to exploring a bit about this little known dental procedure and what benefits it may offer someone. Basically, the purpose of a tuberosity reduction is to address the large, bony protrusion which is found way on the back of your upper jaw by the last molar. It is actually located under the gums. Normally, this isn't even a problem unless it has grown to the point where it is making things like chewing or swallowing difficult or has possibly broken through the gum line. But there is one particular instance when reducing its size is necessary:

Better Fitting Dentures

For folks who are in the process of replacing their teeth with dentures, a large tuberosity could cause a serious issue with the fit of the denture plate. In fact, it can keep it from sitting there in place at all, and certainly prevent sealing through the use of pastes or glues. The only way to have this resolved is to have a reduction performed, where the excess tissue, along with any necessary bone, will be removed and the remaining portion smoothed and flattened out as much as possible.

To see if you may be in need of a tuberosity reduction, either for the purposes of dentures or for any other reason, give us a call today and speak with one of our friendly dental staff members. We would be glad to get you scheduled in for a time to come by and visit with one of our oral health caregivers.
