Benefits of Getting Implant Supported Dentures Placed
Posted on 10/5/2020 by Dr. Michael Allard
Patients who choose to get dentures can either get traditional dentures, which are adhered to the gums by a bonding agent or dentures which are attached to dental implants. The traditional dentures are less expensive, however, they typically have issues staying in place and can slip and slide around on the gumline. The bonding adhesive has to be applied numerous times throughout the day to ensure they stay in place as best they can. The dental implants are secured to the jawbone and then the dentures are attached to the implant providing a secure foundation for them.
What are the Benefits?
For those patients who choose implant support dentures, they have increased stability. Because the implant is embedded in bone, they will remain secure and in place. The dentures act more like real teeth because they are in a fixed state. Patients no longer have to eat only soft foods and can once again enjoy the foods they loved. Corn on the cob is not an impossibility and neither is a rare steak.
Because they are well anchored, enunciation is now crystal clear, and patients note much clearer speech. This is key when engaged in conversation in social gatherings. It also makes the patient much easier to understand on the phone.
The most important benefit to the patient's health has to do with the jawbone. Many times, when traditional dentures are used, the upper and lower jaw do not get the pressure and stimulation necessary to maintain healthy bone structure. Both jawbones need stimulation to maintain strength and good health. Without the pressure, the bone begins to deteriorate. With dental implants anchoring the denture to the bone, it once again has the pressure necessary to remain healthy.
