Pain in Your Mouth After a Car Accident Requires at Least an Exam

Pain in Your Mouth After a Car Accident Requires at Least an ExamAny kind of trauma can have associated pain with it. We bang our knee into a table in the dark or bump our head against the door frame. These all have pain associated with them. If you are in a car accident and have mouth pain lingering for a few days, you should strongly consider having a dental exam. We can hit dashboards, steering wheels, windows or windshields when we are in a car accident. There could be lose cargo or debris in the car which could strike us too.

While some injuries are readily seen, others are not. Why? Not all injuries are readily visible. Certainly, if a tooth is broken with a section missing, we can see it easily enough. But if after you check your teeth and gums, making sure their appearance looks normal in the mirror, some of the injuries could be hidden. Teeth can have cracks or fractures in them which are not visible to the naked eye. They can have pain associated with them when biting down. The motion causes the teeth to spread apart, exposing the dentin or, in some cases, the pulp, which is the nerve center of the tooth.

These injuries would need to be professionally assessed by using x-rays to determine what the best course of action is to treat the fracture or cracked tooth. There are a variety of treatment options available to save the injured tooth. Crowns can even hold the fractured pieces together to save the natural tooth.
