Wisdom Teeth Extraction Glendale, AZ
Types of Impaction and Eruption
The wisdom teeth typically appear in adults between the ages of 17 and 25. Not all people have a complete eruption of their wisdom teeth and many experience partial eruption or impaction that can cause pain or discomfort.
Wisdom teeth are third molars that erupt later in life. By the time you have reached your late teens or early twenties, you may not have sufficient space in your mouth to accommodate four additional teeth. This can create pain in your teeth and jaw. Wisdom teeth pain can also be caused by the irritation of the gums or even a gum infection, resulting from bacteria that get trapped in the spaces around a partially erupted tooth.
If you have wisdom teeth pain, schedule a consultation for extraction with Dr. Michael Allard. Dr. Allard is a skilled oral surgeon who offers wisdom teeth removal in Glendale, AZ.
What to Expect From Your Visit for Wisdom Teeth Removal
Extractions may be performed with local anesthetic alone or, more comfortably, in combination with sedation dentistry and/or a general anesthetic. The technique chosen depends on the needs of the patient, the amount of wisdom tooth pain present, the severity of the condition and the number of teeth being removed. Intravenous (conscious) sedation and/or general anesthesia in our state of the art facility, are commonly used to allow for a safe and comfortable experience.
Once you are comfortable, Dr. Allard will make an incision in the gum tissue and if necessary, remove the bone that covers the tooth. If the tooth has partially erupted and grown straight, Dr. Allard may be able to relax the connective fibers that hold the tooth by rocking it back and forth, pulling the whole tooth out as he would in a simple extraction. If not, however, the tooth structure may need to be cut into several pieces which can be removed more easily. After the entire tooth is removed, the incision will be sutured closed.
Following wisdom teeth extractions, we will provide thorough post-operative instructions for you to follow in order to promote the best healing environment.Call Dr. Allard in Glendale, AZ today to schedule your consultation for wisdom teeth removal.
Platelet Rich Fibrin
Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) is patient derived living biomaterial, which when prepared and combined properly, is a key component of tissue healing and regeneration. PRF may be used where protection and stimulation of healing and regeneration is critical. PRF has been shown to stimulate bone/tissue healing.
Platelet gel acts as a stabilized blood clot and thus is a perfect filling material for natural ,issue regeneration and healing.
Post-extraction socket augmentation/healing: The healing and remodeling of an extraction socket is highly dependent on the initial stabilization of the blood clot and the overlying wound closure. This is enhanced by placing the fibrin plug into the socket and closing with a fibrin membrane. The use of PRF into new extraction sites is also useful to reduce the early adverse effects of inflammation which can reduce post-operative pain.
PRF is also commonly used to minimize other post-operative complications such as osteitis ("dry sockets"). Dry sockets result from delayed or potentially compromised healing whereby the stability of the existing clot is adversely affected. PRF helps stabilize the existing clot and when used , may amplify the natural coagulation process and enhance healing.
PRF has also been shown to assist in healing with medically compromised patients - (ie - diabetics, patients receiving bisphosphonate medications-presenting a risk of osteonecrosis of the jaws, or patients receiving anticoagulants).
PRF has been shown to assist in minimizing periodontal complications associated with bone defects with second molars after complicated wisdom teeth removal. PRF promotes soft tissue healing and faster regeneration of bone.
The benefits derived from using PRF have been proven. Its use promotes wound healing and tissue regeneration. Its anti-bacterial and anti-hemorrhagic effects, coupled with its low risk and low cost favor its use, thusly allowing it to maximiaze post-operative healing.
